Members and carbon offset payments

Congratulations to all those members who have been prompt with their subscription payments for the Financial Year 2006/2007, if you paid last week your receipts are in the mail. If you have put my reminder letter aside - please act now.

As financial members of our Landcare group you have access to the Southern Otways Landcare Network (SOLN) Co-ordinators and the many and varied programs run by SOLN. This means you are entitled to assistance with access to project funding, complimentary trees and advice from the Network.

Last week Landcare Australia launched its groundbreaking carbon emissions offset project, Landcare CarbonSMART, which has the potential to reward landholders who have re-vegetated parts of their property by paying them an income for up to 30 years.

Landcare Australia is urging landholders across Australia - particularly those who have undertaken Landcare plantings since 1990 - to find out how they might secure ongoing annual income through the project.

It is estimated that a 10 hectare area of trees with mixed species could yield approximately $20,000 over a 30 year period through CarbonSMART. The new program has been launched in NSW, with a voluntary offset project in Victoria. A scoping study is currently underway in Queensland. Voluntary offset opportunities are anticipated in the future in other States and Territories and landholders are encouraged to send in an Expression of Interest.

Any member wanting more information and eligibility requirements should visit http://www.carbonsmart.com.au or call 1800 151 105 to request an Information Pack.
