Shiitake mushrooms: training & inoculation day 16th November

Otway Agroforestry Network (OAN) is running a Shiitake Training and Inoculation day on Friday 16th of November. Places are limited so please register your
interest now (see contacts below).
Participants are asked to bring along about 10 logs (maximum of 20 logs) for inoculation. If you don’t have logs there will be some available for sale. The logs can be of any hardwood tree species (not pine or cypress) as we are interested in trialing production
on many sites with many species. We have had success with Oaks, Eucalypts, Acacia and other species.
The dimensions of each log should be around 1m long and 12-16cm in diameter. They can be branches or stems but they should be straight with the branches removed for easy handling; The logs should be cut and stored for at least a week prior to inoculation. Simply cut them to length, leave the bark on and don’t let them dry out.
The inoculation involves drilling about 25 holes in each log and hammering in a dowel. Bees wax is applied over the wounds and on each end to conserve moisture.
The logs should then the stacked in a moist shaded area and regularly watered for 5 or 6 months before soaking to initiate fruiting next autumn.
